In Vitro Colors by Panda Suwann
This solo exhibition by Panda Suwann showcases the artist's studies of how materials and emotions interact within her abstract paintings. Coming from a scientific background, Suwann approaches her paintings through controlled experimental processes, observing the changes in the paint and adjusting along the way based upon each outcome.
She creates these pieces with many layers of gesso and acrylic paints using water to balance or to scatter the pigment along the surface, which provides different blends of textures and values.
The end results mirror the images one sees when looking through a microscope:
a myriad of shapes, colors, and repetitive designs that are the building blocks of life.
Each piece of Suwann's is just that; one part of the whole that makes up who she is.
Based in Jersey City, Panda Suwann works with many media to convey social issues and
life conflicts while intriguing the audience with outlandish and quirky methods and materials
in her work. This local, young artist chooses to create not just art but dialogues that help to
further causes, from women’s rights to the negative effects of social media in today’s society.
Her bold attitude is reflected in her choices of materials from food-based products to clothing, inspired by her years as a seamstress.
With many influences from philosophers and artists, she draws inspiration from feminist
clothing artist, Mimi Smith, as well as from the boldness, attitude and metaphorical ideas
of the neo-German expressionist, Anselm Kiefer. Both artists use unorthodox materials
and methods to represent their thoughts and concepts in their work.
With her work, she hopes her concepts and ideas help educate and provoke new ideas for better life. Her expectations for the future drive her into making these works to rise above this generation and its selfishness, to rise above "Generation Me". She hopes to trigger more self-awareness and provide enlightenment to a generation that will hopefully
challenge these misconceptions and wrongful ways of living.
